There is a recent push for new mental health strategies to prevent violence and other social ills. One avenue being explored is new technological innovations such as “mental health applications” (MHAs), which provide new opportunities to reach patients and treat risks. But what rules and strategies have to come along with the advent of MHA?
Mental health apps have been available for some time, as mentioned in A Previous article. Unlike human therapists, digital mental health apps are available 24/7. Besides providing journal prompts and inspirational messages, mental health apps also collect passive self-report data. New generation MHAs integrate biometric sensors and devices such as smart watches, phones or sensor platforms to monitor fluctuations in the user’s daily signals. The latest devices log data: from physical activity to sleep data, skin resistance, temperature, blood oxygen levels, EKGs, fall detectors, and even emergency medical alerts. These body-worn devices provide automatic monitoring of readings and activity to reduce the burden of patients having to enter data. The latest MHAs smash all that psychological data by using algorithms to identify and employ trends AI to provide feedback. In the near future, they will likely also provide initial diagnoses and even treatments. Several steps can be considered:
- Psychologists should verify the accuracy of MHAs. Consider the consequences of misdiagnosis, false positives, or false negatives. Strict user permissions and privacy protections are critical to the new limits of digital mental health records, especially if we want patients to adopt and use new technology.3
- MHAs will eventually evolve toward providing treatments. In the future, the high-risk outcome may lead to the MHA’s recommendations to seek treatment, or direct potential patients to mental health services. Soon, virtual mental health assistants may act as secret sound boards, prompting users to reveal their problems, stories, and feelings. Perhaps some people will prefer “treatment” with an anonymous, non-judgmental robot? This will be the brave new futuristic world of computer-mediated evaluation and therapy. With the acceptance of MHAs, developers and clinicians will have to consider establishing rules to protect user privacy. Circumstances in which MHA data may be used ethically and legally to promote public safety must also be identified.
