‘Lack of calories helped me lose 53 pounds from PCOS’

My name is Yasmine Mai (Yasmine) I am 26 years old. I live in Maryland and am a full time social media content creator. After I gave birth to my son, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I worked with a registered dietitian to find a calorie deficit and started going to classes. Together, these changes have helped me lose more than 50 pounds.


All my life, I’ve had problems with my weight. It all started when I was about 9 years old. My whole family loves to eat, so I loved eating, too. I cheered, but because of my eating habits, I wasn’t the best fit.

Around the age of 14, I started cheerleading in high school and got really serious about getting fit. My parents got my first gym membership and I fell in love with it right away work with it. I’m going four to five days a week plus cheer practice.

I lost 30 pounds, hit and maintained my lowest weight of 126 pounds until my last year of high school. That’s when I quit cheerleading and gained 15 pounds because I worked at IHOP and was eating very late at night because I always worked the evening shifts after school.

Once I graduated from high school and went to college, I started Birth control– That’s when my weight spiraled upward.

I was ravenous, and I had no idea why. I thought it was birth control, so I stopped taking it. Soon, I found out that I was pregnant with my son. At that point, I had gone from 140 to 190 pounds, and had gained an extra 30 pounds during pregnancy. After I gave birth, I tried everything to lose weight, but nothing worked.

When my son was 5 years old, I went to see my doctor who told me that Polycystic ovary syndrome (Polycystic ovary syndrome) after blood work and an ultrasound of the pelvic area. I didn’t have ovarian cysts, but my hormones were out of control, which made losing weight even more difficult for me. PCOS is incurable, but I’ve learned that you can reduce symptoms by making lifestyle changes. Being diagnosed with PCOS was a relief because I was then able to start figuring out ways to reduce inflammation in my body and reduce symptoms.

After I was diagnosed with PCOS, I was motivated to have better health and live a longer life for my son and husband.

When I stepped on the scale and saw that I was 253 pounds, I said to myself, I’m only 26, and I refuse to live the rest of my life heavy, miserable, and at risk of developing health issues down the road.

So, I met a registered dietitian Specialist in PCOSAnd we came up with a meal plan that works best for me.

For PCOS, a low-carbohydrate diet is recommended, because people with PCOS often have insulin resistance. I ate low on carbs for the first two months of my trip and dropped the first 20 pounds.

After that, I started exercising more and realized I needed more carbohydrates throughout the day to fuel my body. I started doing more research on A Calorie deficiency My diet, and with the dietitian we calculated my deficit. I’ve been following it ever since, and now I’ve lost 53 pounds.

This is what I eat for the day.

  • breakfast: Overnight oats with Greek yogurt, almond milk, monk fruit sweetener and strawberries
  • lunch: Some kind of power and protein
  • Snacks: Protein shake, salami, cheese, berries, boiled eggs, celery or granola
  • Dinner: Steak or salmon served with basmati rice and cooked vegetables
  • candy: Halo Top Ice Cream or Sugar Free Popsicles

    I started exercising right away.

    I didn’t want to confuse myself at first, so I just started walking 30 minutes outside every day. My usual week of exercise now is Pre class Four to five days a week with cardio two to three days a week. I just take one day off between two.

    These three changes made my weight loss journey successful.

    1. Drink plenty of water. The water helps keep me hydrated, and I sweat a lot during my workouts, so it’s really important for me to be Stay hydrated. I drink at least 64 ounces of water daily.
    2. Carbs are great! Don’t be afraid of them. I’ve been dreading eating carbs for the longest time, but even with PCOS, my blood work is back to normal and I’m eating carbs every day. They are essential when exercising and lifting weights.
    3. focus on “The size of the foods. The thing my dietitian went with me was bulk foods, which are foods you can eat a lot for fewer calories. For example, cauliflower rice, berries, celery, cauliflower, watermelon, etc. The list goes on! Eating and eating bulky foods has helped me tremendously on this journey.

        Listen to your body and give it what it needs. Not every day will be perfect. It’s okay to reach for that donut instead of the apple – this overall balance is key to successful weight loss. Don’t forget to love yourself during this entire journey! The last thing is to be patient, consistent, and confident in the process. I still learn this every day by myself!
