There are portraits of Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, famous portraits unveiled in 2018, and both works of the first black artists ever to be commissioned for official portraits of the president and first lady, Amy Sherald and Kehinde Wiley.

“Wiley and Sherald are the first African-American artists selected for official portraits of a president or first lady in a photo gallery,” de Young says in a statement. “The two artists worked independently of each other. However, in painting these two portraits, Wiley and Sherald effectively re-imagined the centuries-old tradition of representing political leaders. Prior to photography, painted portraits were often the primary portrait of the President of the United States.”

Why are there flowers behind Barack Obama’s painting? Funny you have to ask! According to de Young’s release, flowers “have a special significance in the lives of the president and his family. They include chrysanthemums, the official flower of Chicago; jasmine, which honors the sitter’s birthplace and breeding in Hawaii; and purple African lilies, native to Kenya.”

“Michelle Lavon Robinson Obama” by Amy Sherald, oil on linen, 2018, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution.

Michelle Obama’s portrait depicts, respectively, “the modernist traditions of abstract art and traditional plaid quilts of the Gee’s Bend community in Alabama,” according to the same version.
